Its style was simple yet efficient: black and white photographs contrasting with great surfaces of flat colour, the medium tones of a photo and the texture of a face dissolved into graininess, contrasting with the solidity of abstract, geometric colours. It was an old strategy, derived, at least. from the avant-gardes, when photography was still a novelty on the printed page.
D is a collection devoted to Portuguese designers from various different generations. Artists in several disciplines, from communication to objects, fashion to graphic arts, and from advertising to illustration. In essence they are visual monographs that aim to provide an Initial encounter with the rich yet relatively unexamined history of Portuguese design, highlighting its excellence and significance for the present and future of design teaching and practice.
