No one knows who first had the idea to call Lisbon folk "lettuces". But at one time, there lived a young girl with her hair in ringlets, a great granddaughter of Moors who had lived in Portugal, and who sold lettuces and who one day conceived an unthinkable plan to rescue Lisbon from a "siege" of snails. Between a mixture of legend and reality, the one thing that we do know with certainty is the snails always taste better when they are served on a lettuce leaf.
