Drawing reigns supreme in all of his work, from scenery and costume design for opera, theatre and ballet to medal designs, from mural painting, ceramics, stained glass windows and tapestries in architectural spaces to editorial illustration. Far removed from the aqueous indolence of India ink and watercolour, almost all of his graphic work has been made with gouache, a course material requiring a firm hand, and in this duel, Luís Filipe has always emerged victorious. Luís Filipe de Abreu's singular importance in the history of visual arts in Portugal resides in the narrative quality of his illustrations, brought to life by his virtuoso depiction of the human body and audacious use of perspective, and in the dynamic, intermittent nature and palpable density of his lines.

D is a collection devoted to Portuguese designers from various different generations. Artists in several disciplines, from communication to objects, fashion to graphic arts, and from advertising to illustration. In essence they are visual monographs that aim to provide an Initial encounter with the rich yet relatively unexamined history of Portuguese design, highlighting its excellence and significance for the present and future of design teaching and practice.
