Genuine and touching products of portuguese design
A Vida Portuguesa celebrates Sarah Affonso (1899-1983), a great artist who was a Modernist painter and wondrous embroiderer, an independent woman married to José de Almada Negreiros, and a dedicated and creative mother all at once.
At the request of her granddaughters, Rita and Catarina, and based on the family’s assets, we rediscovered Sarah’s work, and drew inspiration from it to come up with toys, notebooks, books, jewellery and household objects that recreate her world.
This special collection of objects inspired by Sarah Affonso’s life and work was created to celebrate the 120th anniversary of her birth and the two great exhibitions of her oeuvre in Lisbon at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and at the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado, in 2019.
The Notebook features on the cover a portrait of Sarah Affonso, during her first stay in Paris. This very special object - with reproduction of the artist's signature in golden ink - pays tribute to Sarah the independent, adventurous, ahead of her time, tenacious woman, who at age 24 took the decision to travel alone to Paris.
“It was me by myself. I did it out of dare. I had come from Paris, I was amazed, confident about certain things, and why wouldn’t I go into A Brasileira? It wasn’t about enjoying coffee, because I didn’t. But given that women stayed out, I went in. Being young, everyone would stare, some laughing, but then they got used to it, and they no longer cared.” In “Conversas com Sarah Affonso” de Maria José de Almada Negreiros, Arcádia, 1982, Lisboa.
