Fábrica de Faianças Artísticas Bordalo Pinheiro carries the torch of the Fábrica de Louça das Caldas da Rainha, founded in 1884 by the designer and caricaturist genius Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. There he developed, up to his death in 1905, an original artistic project, combining industrial production with a quest for the essence of being Portuguese. After the factory went bankrupt, Manuel Gustavo Bordalo Pinheiro purchased his father’s moulds and drawings at a public auction, to start the new factory in 1922. And up to this day, it goes on reproducing pieces from that extraordinary faience collection, that keeps expanding with new creations inspired by his originals, such as lobster plates or cabbage dinnerware – without forgetting the original swallows.
