The story of the extraordinary Minho jewellery is entangled with that of Travassos, near Póvoa do Lanhoso, a “workshop-village”, where every family is or has been linked to the craft. That led to the claim, passed on through the generations: “Portuguese jewellery was born here”. Despite the increasing industrialisation involved in gold production, there are still 40 traditional workshops, that inherited the knowledge and art that shine through in the traditional pieces: the “bambolina” or the “requife” earrings, the “partridge eye” beards, the laces, the butterflies, the naive medals with dedications and, of course, the typical and opulent filigree hearts. Not forgetting the superb gold sequin cord, produced in Portugal for 2.000 years now. The jewellery pieces available at A Vida Portuguesa come from the Travassos Gold Museum, a project that became an example of how to preserve and stimulate Minho’s jewellery tradition.
