The first references to Estremoz's figures date back to the beginning of the 18th century. A region with abundant and high-quality clay for modeling, the clay modellers of Estremoz – who in the beginning they were only women – began the figurative tradition as “santeiras” (people who model saints), in response to a popular spiritual need. Therefore, it was natural that, taking as inspiration the large Nativity scenes made in clay and following the scheme observed in the erudite nativity scenes, that they knew from convents and wealthier houses where they were exhibited for worship, the nativity scene was transposed to this material, adapted to local taste and tradition - and translated to a more domestic and humble scale.

The scene surrounding the Holy Family was joined by the Magi, the regional Offerors and a vast repertoire, such as the “Shepherd eating”, the “Shepherd sleeping”, the “Woman with Chickens”, the “Shepherd with the goat on his back”, among others.

Composed of singular figures of rich detail and brightly colored painting, the Figurado de Estremoz (Estremoz Figures) - today also molded and painted by hand by men - has been recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
