About the workshop: Palm weaving is a traditional basketry technique from the Algarve using dried leaves from the European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis). During the workshop, Ysaline talks about the history and value of palm weaving, from harvesting to drying the palm, and teaches the different stages of the technique: from braiding the palm strips into a long ribbon to sewing it into a small basket or other shape.
About Ysaline Ophoff: Born in Belgium and with a background in architecture, Ysaline Ophoff decided in 2019 to dive into basket weaving techniques with local artisans in the Brazilian Amazon. More than just learning a technique, she came across a way of living connected to nature and tradition. In 2020, she moved to Portugal and founded Atelier Balancê. Applying basketry techniques to natural fibres and discarded ropes, she transforms them into new shapes. Atelier Balancê is a sculptural and poetic exploration that values craftsmanship and respects nature.
