A Vida Portuguesa celebrates Sarah Affonso (1889-1983), a great artist who was a Modernist painter and wondrous embroiderer, an independent woman married to José de Almada Negreiros, and a dedicated and creative mother all at once.
At the request of her granddaughters, Rita and Catarina, and based on the family’s assets, we rediscovered Sarah’s work, and drew inspiration from it to come up with toys, notebooks, books, jewellery and household objects that recreate her world.
This special collection of objects inspired by Sarah Affonso’s life and work was created to celebrate the 120th anniversary of her birth and the two great exhibitions of her oeuvre in Lisbon at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and at the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado, in 2019.
This candleholder is an exact replica of an undated piece of pottery by Sarah Affonso that has been in possession of the family for a long time. For this limited edition, A Vida Portuguesa partnered with the Viúva Lamego ceramic factory, a historic name when it comes to Portuguese ceramic tiles and faience. Established in 1849 at the Intendente Square, in Lisbon, the company has always worked with great artists, architects and designers.
