Strong hands, filled with long-lived wisdom, intertwine the canes that
wildely sprout from the Guadiana river shores, to be typically transformed
into the lidded baskets now coming to fashion. The once daily object that
country people from Algarve and Baixo Alentejo couldn’t do without is
now a desirable one: a symbol of style and originality.
Jane Birkin fell for it and didn’t drop it through the 60s and 70s.
The Portuguese basket became her favourite handbag, and that’s why
it’s called the Birkin Basket, on trendier circles.
