The ceramic pieces made to look like cabbage leaves are amongst the most distinctive and reproduced Bordalo Pinheiro creations. They became so popular they spread to dishes, bowls, cups and the like. Such as this tureen, for instance.
In 1891, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro shaped some ceramic swallows thatcontinue hanging from the ceiling of Tabacaria Mónaco, in the Rossio square inLisbon. Getting carried away, he used them on plates, tiles and otherdecorative pieces. The image of this beautiful and joyful bird, known to bebrave and faithful, touched the Portuguese heart and, throughout the 20thcentury, was adapted by handcrafts and used in façades, balconies and domesticinteriors throughout the country.
