This bilingual publication accompanies the exhibition ‘One Hundred Baskets – A Sustainable Technology for the 21st Century’, which opened in 2021 at the Museum of Popular Art (Lisbon) and is dedicated to the study of Portuguese basketry based on the collections of the National Museum of Ethnology and the Museum of Popular Art.

Through raw materials, tools, items from the collections of both museums, as well as drawings, photographs and interconnected data, the publication presents the past and reveals the current ecosystem of this craft, highlighting processes and knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

More than a simple survey, the exhibition offers a reflection on sustainability and modes of production, highlighting basketry as a practice that is both regenerative and contemporary, with a future ahead of it. Curated by Astrid Suzano and Fátima Durkee, founders of Passa Ao Futuro, the exhibition forms part of an ongoing research project and serves as a call for the appreciation, preservation and reinvention of this intangible heritage.
