Portuguese heritage seeds
The charm of this flower lies in its rustic character. It prefers wooded and shaded areas, not fearing stony ground and dry mountainous con ditions. Its simple beauty has been a source of inspiration since ancient times. Rosa Albardeira belongs to the Peony family and is a special sub species of the more than fifty species in the world. The flowers, which can reach a diameter of 12 centimetres, are found only in the wild nature of the south and west of the Iberian Peninsula. They are used to adorn and colour Easter processions in Portugal, exalted in love songs and widely appreciated and sought after. Harvesting wild flowers or plants is prohibited by law, as the species is threatened. Our seeds come from certified wild collections, where maintaining the original population is a priority. In this sense, we are proud to work on a project to recover these flowers in Toulões, the first and only peony village in Portugal, in Idanha-a-Nova, close to the border with Spain, where Rosa Albardeira grows wild under majestic oaks on the local hillsides. Germinating the seeds and cultivating the plants is a process that requires patience. The reward is enjoying the splendour of the most beautiful flowers you will ever see.
