"Evergreen specie from the Mediterranean region. Intensely cultivated since ancient times, red carnations are much aprreciated for their beauty and unmistakable scent. There are hundreds of varieties, but it were red carnations that were forever linked to the revolution of April 1974, when a lady, Celeste Caeiro, began to distribute red carnations by the soldiers and they put them in the rifle barrels. The Red, symbol of fire and life, was thus associated with a revolution that led Portugal to democracy, without death or war, putting an end to 48 years of dictatorship."
