It is believed that the mexelote, used in the preparation of the poncha, appeared at the same time as the recipe itself. Given the origins of the drink, it is thought that the first species of mussels may have been made in ivory with somewhat blunt ends in order to extract the juice from the lemon. However, there is no evidence from that historical period in this regard to validate these mere assumptions.
