From Anchieta to Rua Nova do Almada, but still in Chiado!

It is with great joy that we announce that A Vida Portuguesa will move at the end of July to the former Livraria Férin, at Rua Nova do Almada nº 72. The store on Rua Anchieta will close doors on July 21.

Founded in 1840 by the sisters Maria Teresa and Gertrudes Férin - first as a Reading Office and later transformed by Maria Teresa into a bookshop -, Férin was also a typography, publisher and had a bookbinding workshop, eventually being named the Official Bookbinder of the Royal House, at the behest of King D. Pedro V. Standing out for its extensive catalog of foreign books, it became a cultural hub that had as its clientele great personalities and writers such as Eça de Queiroz and Fernando Pessoa, standing out for its offer of works heraldry, genealogy, historical research and military history, travel itineraries and national and foreign art editions.

The second oldest bookshop in Lisbon closed its doors, as such, at the end of 2023, without anyone from the same sector wanting to take it back. Thus, A Vida Portuguesa rents the space to reopen in Chiado, after the future closure of its store on Rua Anchieta.

A Vida Portuguesa, as it has done in other historic spaces it has occupied and continues to occupy, is committed to returning an old shop to the city, preserved and restored down to the last detail. And for the sake of our memory, we decided that the book section will be located right at the entrance, in this new shop that will be much larger than the previous one, also completely occupying the lower floor.

This is the beginning of a new A Vida Portuguesa in Chiado. A happy moment, thanks to a meeting of minds between an exemplary tenant and landlord, the Germano de Sousa family – with thanks to Sancha Trindade from Curated Investments who made the opportune bridge. Together, we want to make this space the most beautiful shop in Chiado. A shop that belongs to the place where it is, that knows its community, that remembers it and that knows how to look further afield.

Therefore, from the end of July, we will welcome our very dear customers, who have supported us so much, in our new A Vida Portuguesa location at Férin, Rua Nova do Almada 72, Chiado.

Meanwhile, the Rua Anchieta shop will remain open until the end of July like all other shops in Lisbon – the A Vida Portuguesa in Largo do Intendente and Time Out Market Lisboa in Mercado da Ribeira, and the Depozito shop, in Rua Nova of Desterro; as well as the most recent A Vida Portuguesa shop in Porto, at São Bento Station and inserted in the Time Out Market Porto.
