Bordallo Pinheiro
Fábrica de Faianças Artísticas Bordallo Pinheiro carries the torch of Fábrica de Louça das Caldas da Rainha, founded in 1884 by the draftsman and caricaturist genius Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro. There he developed, up to his death in 1905, an original artistic project in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement, combining industrial production with a quest for the essence of being Portuguese, mixing creativity, naturalism and humor. After the bankruptcy of the original factory, Manuel Gustavo Bordallo Pinheiro bought his father's molds and drawings at public auction, now in the collection of this unit founded in 1922. Faience from this extraordinary collection continues to be reproduced here, from lobster dishes to cabbage services, and, of course, the original swallows. Owned by the Visabeira Group since 2009, it gained international fame, with emphasis on the limited series signed by artists such as Paula Rego, Joana Vasconcelos or Vik Muniz.
